African Virtual University
The African Virtual University (AVU) is a Pan African Intergovernmental Organization established by charter with the mandate of significantly increasing access to quality higher education and training through the innovative use of information communication technologies. Founded in 1997, the AVU Mission is “To prepare learners using Open, Distance and eLearning to better contribute to the development of the African continent through provision of high quality tertiary and continuing education."
The AVU Charter has been signed so far by 19 African Governments-Kenya, Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, Ghana, Republic of Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger, South Sudan, Sudan, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Cape Verde.
The AVU has contributed to the training of over 75,000 students across Africa and established the largest network of Open Distance and eLearning institutions comprising of 53 institutions in over 30 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. AVU works across borders and languages in Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone Africa.
The AVU has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and a Regional office in Dakar Senegal.
